The Gibeonite Deception
1. And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
1. A la nouvelle de ces choses, tous les rois qui étaient en deçà du Jourdain, dans la montagne et dans la vallée, et sur toute la côte de la grande mer, jusque près du Liban, les Héthiens, les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens,
1. Ary izao no niseho, rehefa nandre izany ny mpanjaka rehetra izay tety an-dafin' i Jordana, tamin' ny tany havoana, sy tamin' ny tany lemaka, ary tamin' ny tany amoron-tsiraka rehetra amoron' ny Ranomasina Lehibe tandrifin' i Libanona, dia ny Hetita, ny Amorita, ny Kananita, ny Perizita, ny Hivita ary ny Jebosita,
2. That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
2. s`unirent ensemble d`un commun accord pour combattre contre Josué et contre Israël.
2. Dia niray hina niangona hiady tamin' i Josoa sy ny Isiraely izy ireo.
3. And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
3. Les habitants de Gabaon, de leur côté, lorsqu`ils apprirent de quelle manière Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï,
3. Ary rehefa ren' ny mponina tao Gibeona izay efa nataon' i Josoa tamin' i Jeriko sy Ay,
4. They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
4. eurent recours à la ruse, et se mirent en route avec des provisions de voyage. Ils prirent de vieux sacs pour leurs ânes, et de vieilles outres à vin déchirées et recousues,
4. Dia nanao hafetsena kosa izy ireo ka nandeha, ary nody ho iraka ka nitondra lasaka tonta nasampiny teo amin' ny borikiny sy siny hoditra misy ranom-boaloboka, tonta, sady triatra no nofehipehezina.
5. And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
5. "ils portaient à leurs pieds de vieux souliers raccommodés, et sur eux de vieux vêtements; et tout le pain qu`ils avaient pour nourriture était sec et en miettes."
5. "Ary kapa tonta sady nitampitampina teo amin' ny tongony, ary lamba tonta no notafiny; ary efa maina sy bobongolo ny mofo rehetra izay vatsiny;"
6. And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
6. Ils allèrent auprès de Josué au camp de Guilgal, et ils lui dirent, ainsi qu`à tous ceux d`Israël: Nous venons d`un pays éloigné, et maintenant faites alliance avec nous.
6. "Dia nankany amin' i Josoa teo an-toby tany Gilgala izy ireo ka niteny taminy sy tamin' ny Isiraelita nanao hoe: Avy any an-tany lavitra izahay; koa ankehitriny mba manaova fanekena aminay ianareo."
7. And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
7. Les hommes d`Israël répondirent à ces Héviens: Peut-être que vous habitez au milieu de nous, et comment ferions-nous alliance avec vous?
7. Ary hoy ny lehilahy amin' ny Isiraely tamin' ireo Hivita ireo: Angamba mponina ato aminay ihany ianareo, ka ataonay ahoana no fanao fanekena aminareo?
8. And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
8. Ils dirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes serviteurs. Et Josué leur dit: Qui êtes-vous, et d`où venez-vous?
8. Fa hoy izy ireo tamin' i Josoa: Mpanomponao izahay. Ary hoy Josoa taminy: Iza moa ianareo ary avy aiza?
9. And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
9. "Ils lui répondirent: Tes serviteurs viennent d`un pays très éloigné, sur le renom de l`Éternel, ton Dieu; car nous avons entendu parler de lui, de tout ce qu`il a fait en Égypte,"
9. "Dia hoy izy ireo taminy: avy any an-tany lavitra indrindra izahay mpanomponao noho ny anaran' i Jehovah Andriamanitrao; fa efa renay ny lazany sy izay rehetra nataony tany Egypta."
10. And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
10. et de la manière dont il a traité les deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain, Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Aschtaroth.
10. Ary izay rehetra nataony tamin' ny mpanjaka roa tamin' ny Amorita, izay tany an-dafin' i Jordana, dia Sihona, mpanjakan' i Hesbona, sy Oga, mpanjakan' i Basana, izay tany Astarta.
11. Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
11. Et nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des provisions pour le voyage, allez au-devant d`eux, et vous leur direz: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, et maintenant faites alliance avec nous.
11. "Dia niteny taminay ny loholonay sy ny mponina rehetra amin' ny taninay ka nanao hoe: Mitondrà vatsy eny an-tananareo ho any amin' izay haleha, dia mandehana hitsena azy, ka lazao aminy hoe: Mpanomponao izahay; koa ankehitriny manaova fanekena aminay."
12. This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
12. Voici notre pain: il était encore chaud quand nous en avons fait provision dans nos maisons, le jour où nous sommes partis pour venir vers vous, et maintenant il est sec et en miettes.
12. "Itony mofonay itony dia vao mafana no nalainay tany an-tranonay ho vatsy tamin' ny andro nivoahanay hankaty aminareo; fa ankehitriny, indro, efa maina sy bobongolo izy;"
13. And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
13. "Ces outres à vin, que nous avons remplies toutes neuves, les voilà déchirées; nos vêtements et nos souliers se sont usés par l`excessive longueur de la marche."
13. "Ary vaovao ireto siny hoditra misy divay ireto izay nofenoinay; fa, indreo, efa triatra izy; ary efa rovitra ireto lambanay sy kapanay ireto noho ny halavitry ny dia naleha."
14. And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
14. Les hommes d`Israël prirent de leurs provisions, et ils ne consultèrent point l`Éternel.
14. Ary nangalan' ny olona ny vatsin' ireo, nefa tsy nanontany toro-hevitra tamin' ny vavan' i Jehovah izy.
15. And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
15. Josué fit la paix avec eux, et conclut une alliance par laquelle il devait leur laisser la vie, et les chefs de l`assemblée le leur jurèrent.
15. "Ary Josoa dia nanao fihavanana taminy ka nanao fanekena taminy mba hamela azy ho velona; ary ny lohan' ny fiangonana dia nianiana taminy."
16. And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
16. Trois jours après la conclusion de cette alliance, les enfants d`Israël apprirent qu`ils étaient leurs voisins, et qu`ils habitaient au milieu d`eux.
16. Ary izao no niseho, nony afaka hateloana taorian' ny efa nanaovany fanekena taminy, dia reny fa mifanakaiky aminy ihany ireo sady mitoetra eo aminy.
17. And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.
17. "Car les enfants d`Israël partirent, et arrivèrent à leurs villes le troisième jour; leurs villes étaient Gabaon, Kephira, Beéroth et Kirjath Jearim."
17. Dia niainga ny Zanak' Isiraely ka tonga tany an-tanànan' ireo tamin' ny andro fahatelo. Ary Gibeona sy Kefira sy Berota ary Kiriata-jearima no tanànany.
18. And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
18. Ils ne les frappèrent point, parce que les chefs de l`assemblée leur avaient juré par l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël, de leur laisser la vie. Mais toute l`assemblée murmura contre les chefs.
18. Ary tsy namely azy ny Zanak' Isiraely, satria Jehovah, Andriamanitry ny Isiraely, no efa nianianan' ny lohan' ny fiangonana taminy. Dia nimonomonona tamin' ireo loholona ny fiangonana rehetra.
19. But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
19. Et tous les chefs dirent à toute l`assemblée: Nous leur avons juré par l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël, et maintenant nous ne pouvons les toucher.
19. Fa hoy ny loholona rehetra tamin' ny fiangonana rehetra: Jehovah, Andriamanitry ny Isiraely, no efa nianiananay taminy, koa ankehitriny tsy mahazo mikasika azy isika.
20. This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.
20. Voici comment nous les traiterons: nous leur laisserons la vie, afin de ne pas attirer sur nous la colère de l`Éternel, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait.
20. Fa izao no hataontsika aminy: Havelantsika ho velona ihany izy, fandrao hisy fahatezerana mahatratra antsika noho ny fianianana nataontsika taminy.
21. And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
21. Ils vivront, leur dirent les chefs. Mais ils furent employés à couper le bois et à puiser l`eau pour toute l`assemblée, comme les chefs le leur avaient dit.
21. Ary hoy ny loholona taminy: Aoka ihany ho velona izy ireo, nefa aoka ho tonga mpikapa hazo sy mpantsaka rano ho an' ny fiangonana rehetra izy ireo, araka ny teny nampanantenain' ny loholona azy ireo.
22. And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
22. Josué les fit appeler, et leur parla ainsi: Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés, en disant: Nous sommes très éloignés de vous, tandis que vous habitez au milieu de nous?
22. Dia niantso azy ireo Josoa ka niteny taminy nanao hoe: Nahoana no namitaka anay ianareo ka nanao hoe: Lavitra anareo indrindra izahay, kanjo eto aminay ihany no onenanareo?
23. Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
23. Maintenant vous êtes maudits, et vous ne cesserez point d`être dans la servitude, de couper le bois et de puiser l`eau pour la maison de mon Dieu.
23. Koa ankehitriny voaozona ianareo, ary tsy hisy ho afaka, fa ho andevo sy ho mpikapa hazo ary ho mpantsaka rano ho an' ny tranon' Andriamanitro ianareo.
24. And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
24. Ils répondirent à Josué, et dirent: On avait rapporté à tes serviteurs les ordres de l`Éternel, ton Dieu, à Moïse, son serviteur, pour vous livrer tout le pays et pour en détruire devant vous tous les habitants, et votre présence nous a inspiré une grande crainte pour notre vie: voilà pourquoi nous avons agi de la sorte.
24. "Dia namaly an' i Josoa izy ireo ka nanao hoe: Satria efa nambara tokoa taminay mpanomponao fa Jehovah Andriamanitrao efa nandidy an' i Mosesy mpanompony hanome anareo ny tany rehetra sy handringana ny mponina rehetra amin' ny tany eo anoloanareo, ary natahotra ny ho faty tokoa izahay noho ny aminareo, ka dia nanao izany zavatra izany;"
25. And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.
25. "Et maintenant nous voici entre tes mains; traite-nous comme tu trouveras bon et juste de nous traiter."
25. Koa ankehitriny, indreto, eto an-tananao izahay, koa araka izay ataonao ho tsara sy marina hatao aminay dia ataovy.
26. And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
26. "Josué agit à leur égard comme il avait été décidé; il les délivra de la main des enfants d`Israël, qui ne les firent pas mourir;"
26. Dia nanao izany tamin' ireo izy ka namonjy azy ireo tamin' ny tanan' ny Zanak' Isiraely, mba tsy hahafaty azy ireo.
27. And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
27. mais il les destina dès ce jour à couper le bois et à puiser l`eau pour l`assemblée, et pour l`autel de l`Éternel dans le lieu que l`Éternel choisirait: ce qu`ils font encore aujourd`hui.
27. Dia natolotr' i Josoa tamin' izany andro izany ireo ho mpikapa hazo sy ho mpantsaka rano ho an' ny fiangonana sy ho an' ny alitaran' i Jehovah mandraka androany, eo amin' ny toerana izay hofidiny.
