The Beatitudes
1. And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
1. "Voyant la foule, Jésus monta sur la montagne; et, après qu`il se fut assis, ses disciples s`approchèrent de lui."
1. "Ary Jesosy, nony nahita ny vahoaka, dia niakatra teo an-tendrombohitra; ary rehefa tafapetraka Izy, dia nanatona Azy ny mpianany."
2. And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
2. Puis, ayant ouvert la bouche, il les enseigna, et dit:
2. Dia niloa-bava Izy ka nampianatra azy hoe:
3. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
3. Heureux les pauvres en esprit, car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
3. Sambatra ny malahelo am-panahy, fa azy ny fanjakan’ny lanitra.
4. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
4. Heureux les affligés, car ils seront consolés!
4. Sambatra ny ory, fa izy no hampiononina.
5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
5. Heureux les débonnaires, car ils hériteront la terre!
5. "Sambatra ny malemy fanahy; fa izy no handova ny tany."
6. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
6. Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront rassasiés!
6. "Sambatra ny noana sy mangetaheta ny fahamarinana, fa izy no hovokisana;"
7. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
7. Heureux les miséricordieux, car ils obtiendront miséricorde!
7. Sambatra ny miantra, fa izy no hiantrana.
8. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
8. Heureux ceux qui ont le coeur pur, car ils verront Dieu!
8. Sambatra ny madio am-po, fa izy no hahita an’Andriamanitra.
9. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
9. Heureux ceux qui procurent la paix, car ils seront appelés fils de Dieu!
9. Sambatra ny mpampihavana, fa izy no hatao hoe zanak’Andriamanitra.
10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
10. Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
10. Sambatra izay enjehina noho ny fahamarinana, fa azy ny fanjakan’ny lanitra.
11. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
11. Heureux serez-vous, lorsqu`on vous outragera, qu`on vous persécutera et qu`on dira faussement de vous toute sorte de mal, à cause de moi.
11. Sambatra ianareo, raha haratsian’ny olona sy enjehiny ary asiany izay teny ratsy rehetra hitenenany lainga anareo noho ny amiko.
12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
12. "Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l`allégresse, parce que votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux; car c`est ainsi qu`on a persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous."
12. "Mifalia sy miravoravoa ianareo, fa lehibe ny valim-pitianareo any an-danitra; fa toy izany ihany no nanenjehany ny mpaminany izay talohanareo."
Salt and Light
13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
13. Vous êtes le sel de la terre. Mais si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi la lui rendra-t-on? Il ne sert plus qu`à être jeté dehors, et foulé aux pieds par les hommes.
13. "Ianareo no fanasin’ny tany; fa raha ny fanasina no tonga matsatso, inona indray no hahasira azy? Tsy misy heriny hanaovana na inona na inona intsony izy, fa hariana any ivelany ka hohitsahin’ny olona."
14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
14. "Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située sur une montagne ne peut être cachée;"
14. Ianareo no fahazavan’izao tontolo izao. Tsy azo afenina izay tanàna miorina eo an-tampon-kavoana.
15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
15. et on n`allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais on la met sur le chandelier, et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
15. Ary koa, tsy misy olona mandrehitra jiro ka mametraka azy ao ambanin’ny vata famarana, fa apetrany eo amin’ny fanaovanjiro, ka dia mazava amin’izay rehetra ao an-trano izany.
16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
16. Que votre lumière luise ainsi devant les hommes, afin qu`ils voient vos bonnes oeuvres, et qu`ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
16. Aoka hazava eo imason’ny olona toy izany koa ny fahazavanareo, mba hahitany ny asa tsara ataonareo ka hankalazany ny Rainareo Izay any an-danitra.
The Fulfillment of the Law
17. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
17. "Ne croyez pas que je sois venu pour abolir la loi ou les prophètes; je suis venu non pour abolir, mais pour accomplir."
17. "Aza heverina fa tonga Aho handrava ny lalàna, na ny mpaminany; tsy tonga Aho handrava, fa hanatanteraka."
18. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
18. Car, je vous le dis en vérité, tant que le ciel et la terre ne passeront point, il ne disparaîtra pas de la loi un seul iota ou un seul trait de lettre, jusqu`à ce que tout soit arrivé.
18. Fa lazaiko aminareo marina tokoa: Mandra-pahafoanan’ny lanitra sy ny tany, dia tsy hisy ho foana akory amin’ny lalàna, na dia litera iray, na tendron-tsoratra iray aza, mandra-pahatanterak’izy rehetra.
19. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
19. "Celui donc qui supprimera l`un de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire de même, sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux; mais celui qui les observera, et qui enseignera à les observer, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux."
19. "Ary amin’izany, na zovy na zovy no hamaha ny anankiray amin’ireo didy madinika indrindra ireo ka hampianatra ny olona toy izany, dia hatao hoe kely indrindra amin’ny fanjakan’ny lanitra izy; fa na zovy na zovy no hankatò sy hampianatra ireo, dia izy no hatao hoe lehibe amin’ny fanjakan’ny lanitra."
20. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
20. Car, je vous le dis, si votre justice ne surpasse celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n`entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux.
20. Fa lazaiko aminareo: Raha tsy hihoatra noho ny an’ny mpanoradalàna sy ny Fariseo ny fahamarinanareo, dia tsy hiditra amin’ny fanjakan’ny lanitra mihitsy ianareo.
Murder
21. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
21. "Vous avez entendu qu`il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne tueras point; celui qui tuera mérite d`être puni par les juges."
21. "Efa renareo fa voalaza tamin’ny ntaolo hoe: “Aza mamono olona” ; fa izay mamono olona dia mendrika hohelohina amin’ny fitsarana."
22. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
22. "Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère contre son frère mérite d`être puni par les juges; que celui qui dira à son frère: Raca! mérite d`être puni par le sanhédrin; et que celui qui lui dira: Insensé! mérite d`être puni par le feu de la géhenne."
22. "Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo hoe: Izay rehetra tezitezi-poana amin’ny rahalahiny dia mendrika hohelohina amin’ny fitsarana; ary na zovy na zovy no hanao amin’ny rahalahiny hoe: Olom-poana ialahy, dia mendrika hohelohina amin’ny Synedriona; ary na zovy na zovy no hanao hoe: Foka ialahy, dia mendrika ho ao amin’ny helo mirehitra afo."
23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
23. Si donc tu présentes ton offrande à l`autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
23. Ary amin’izany, raha mitondra ny fanatitrao ho eo amin’ny alitara ianao, ary eo no mahatsiaro fa ny rahalahinao manana alahelo aminao,
24. Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
24. "laisse là ton offrande devant l`autel, et va d`abord te réconcilier avec ton frère; puis, viens présenter ton offrande."
24. Dia avelao eo anoloan’ny alitara ny fanatitrao, ka mandehana aloha, ataovy izay hihavananao amin’ny rahalahinao, ary rehefa miverina, dia vao atero ny fanatitrao.
25. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
25. Accorde-toi promptement avec ton adversaire, pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur qu`il ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre à l`officier de justice, et que tu ne sois mis en prison.
25. Mihavàna faingana amin’ilay manana ady aminao, raha mbola miara-dia aminy ianao, fandrao ilay manana ady aminao hanolotra anao amin’ny mpitsara, ary ny mpitsara kosa hanolotra anao amin’ny manampahefana, ka hatao ao an-tranomaizina ianao.
26. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
26. Je te le dis en vérité, tu ne sortiras pas de là que tu n`aies payé le dernier quadrant.
26. Lazaiko aminao marina tokoa: Tsy ho afaka ao mihitsy ianao, ambara-pandoanao ny variraiventy farany indrindra.
Adultery
27. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
27. Vous avez appris qu`il a été dit: Tu ne commettras point d`adultère.
27. Efa renareo fa voalaza tamin' ny ntaolo hoe: “Aza mijangajanga”.
28. But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
28. Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme pour la convoiter a déjà commis un adultère avec elle dans son coeur.
28. Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo fa izay rehetra mijery vehivavy hila azy dia efa nijangajanga taminy tam-pony sahady.
29. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
29. "Si ton oeil droit est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi; car il est avantageux pour toi qu`un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps entier ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne."
29. "Fa raha ny masonao ankavanana no manafintohina anao, dia esory hiala izy, ka ario ho afaka aminao; fa mahasoa anao na dia very aza ny iray momba ny tenanao, ka tsy ny tenanao rehetra no hariana any amin’ny helo."
30. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30. "Et si ta main droite est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi; car il est avantageux pour toi qu`un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps entier n`aille pas dans la géhenne."
30. " Ary raha ny tananao ankavanana no manafintohina anao, dia tapaho izy, ka ario ho afaka aminao; fa mahasoa anao na dia very aza ny iray momba ny tenanao, ka tsy ny tenanao rehetra no hariana any amin’ny helo."
Divorce
31. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
31. Il a été dit: Que celui qui répudie sa femme lui donne une lettre de divorce.
31. Ary voalaza hoe: Na zovy na zovy no misaotra ny vadiny, dia aoka izy hanome an-dravehivavy taratasy fisaoram-bady.
32. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
32. Mais moi, je vous dis que celui qui répudie sa femme, sauf pour cause d`infidélité, l`expose à devenir adultère, et que celui qui épouse une femme répudiée commet un adultère.
32. "Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo hoe: Izay rehetra misaotra ny vadiny afa-tsy noho ny fahavetavetana ihany dia mampijangajanga azy; ary na zovy na zovy no hanambady izay voasaotra, dia mijangajanga."
Oaths
33. Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
33. Vous avez encore appris qu`il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne te parjureras point, mais tu t`acquitteras envers le Seigneur de ce que tu as déclaré par serment.
33. Ary koa, efa renareo fa voalaza tamin’ny ntaolo hoe: Aza mianian-tsy tò, fa efao amin’i Jehovah ny fianiananao.
34. But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
34. "Mais moi, je vous dis de ne jurer aucunement, ni par le ciel, parce que c`est le trône de Dieu;"
34. "Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo hoe: Aza mianiana akory; na amin’ny lanitra, fa sezafiandrianan’Andriamanitra izany;"
35. Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
35. "ni par la terre, parce que c`est son marchepied; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c`est la ville du grand roi."
35. "Na amin’ny tany, fa fitoeran-tongony izany; na amin’i Jerosalema, fa tanànan’ny Mpanjaka lehibe izany."
36. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
36. Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, car tu ne peux rendre blanc ou noir un seul cheveu.
36. "Aza mianiana amin’ny lohanao; fa tsy mahay mahafotsy, na mahamainty na dia singam-bolo iray akory aza ianao."
37. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
37. "Que votre parole soit oui, oui, non, non; ce qu`on y ajoute vient du malin."
37. "Fa aoka ny teninareo ho Eny, eny; Tsia, tsia; fa izay mihoatra noho izany dia avy amin’ilay ratsy."
An Eye for an Eye
38. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
38. Vous avez appris qu`il a été dit: oeil pour oeil, et dent pour dent.
38. Efa renareo fa voalaza hoe: “Maso solon’ny maso, ary nify solon’ny nify”.
39. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
39. Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas résister au méchant. Si quelqu`un te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l`autre.
39. "Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo hoe: Aza manohitra izay manisy ratsy anareo; fa na zovy na zovy no mamely tehamaina ny takolakao ankavanana, atolory azy koa ny anankiray."
40. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
40. Si quelqu`un veut plaider contre toi, et prendre ta tunique, laisse-lui encore ton manteau.
40. Ary izay te-hiady aminao ka te-haka ny akanjonao dia avelao ho azy koa ny lambanao.
41. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
41. Si quelqu`un te force à faire un mille, fais-en deux avec lui.
41. Ary na zovy na zovy no hanery anao handeha maily iray, mandehana miaraka aminy maily roa.
42. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
42. Donne à celui qui te demande, et ne te détourne pas de celui qui veut emprunter de toi.
42. "Omeo izay mangataka aminao; ary aza ilaozana mihodina izay te-hisambotra aminao."
Love for Enemies
43. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
43. Vous avez appris qu`il a été dit: Tu aimeras ton prochain, et tu haïras ton ennemi.
43. Efa renareo fa voalaza hoe: “Tiava ny namanao” ary mankahalà ny fahavalonao.
44. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
44. Mais moi, je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et qui vous persécutent,
44. Fa Izaho kosa milaza aminareo hoe: Tiava ny fahavalonareo, misaora izay manozona anareo, asio soa izay mankahala anareo ary mivavaha ho an’izay manao tsinontsinona sy manenjika anareo,
45. That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
45. "afin que vous soyez fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes."
45. "Mba ho tonga zanaky ny Rainareo Izay any an-danitra ianareo; fa Izy mampiposaka ny masoandrony amin’ny ratsy fanahy sy ny tsara fanahy ary mampilatsaka ny ranonorana amin’ny marina sy ny tsy marina."
46. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
46. Si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous? Les publicains aussi n`agissent-ils pas de même?
46. Fa raha izay tia anareo ihany no tianareo, inona no valim-pitia azonareo? Moa na dia ny mpamory hetra aza tsy mba manao toy izany koa va?
47. And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
47. Et si vous saluez seulement vos frères, que faites-vous d`extraordinaire? Les païens aussi n`agissent-ils pas de même?
47. Ary raha ny rahalahinareo ihany no arahabainareo, inona no ataonareo mihoatra noho ny sasany? Moa na dia ny mpamory hetra aza tsy mba manao toy izany koa va?
48. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
48. Soyez donc parfaits, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
48. Koa amin’izany aoka ho tanteraka ianareo toy ny fahatanterahan’ny Rainareo Izay any an-danitra.
