Opposition to the Rebuilding
1. Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

2. Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
2. "Ils vinrent auprès de Zorobabel et des chefs de familles, et leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous; car, comme vous, nous invoquons votre Dieu, et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis le temps d`Ésar Haddon, roi d`Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici."
2. Dia nanatona an' i Zerobabela sy ny lohan' ny fianakaviana izy ka nanao taminy hoe: Aoka mba hiaraka aminareo izahay, fa mitady an' Andriamanitrareo tahaka anareo ihany koa izahay, ary ho Azy no namonoanay zavatra hatao fanatitra hatramin' ny andron' i Esara-hadona, mpanjakan' i Asyria, izay efa nampakatra anay ho aty.
3. But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
3. "Mais Zorobabel, Josué, et les autres chefs des familles d`Israël, leur répondirent: Ce n`est pas à vous et à nous de bâtir la maison de notre Dieu; nous la bâtirons nous seuls à l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël, comme nous l`a ordonné le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse."
3. "Fa Zerobabela sy Jesoa mbamin' ny namany lohan' ny fianakaviana tamin' ny Isiraely namaly azy hoe: Tsy misy raharaha hikambananareo aminay amin' ny hanaovana trano ho an' Andriamanitray; fa izahay no hanao trano ho an' i Jehovah andriamanitry ny Isiraely, araka izay efa nandidian' ny mpanjaka Kyrosy, mpanjakan' i Persia anay."
4. Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
4. "Alors les gens du pays découragèrent le peuple de Juda; ils l`intimidèrent pour l`empêcher de bâtir,"

5. And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
5. et ils gagnèrent à prix d`argent des conseillers pour faire échouer son entreprise. Il en fut ainsi pendant toute la vie de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu`au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

Later Opposition Under Xerxes and Artaxerxes
6. And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
6. Sous le règne d`Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem.

7. And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
7. Et du temps d`Artaxerxès, Bischlam, Mithredath, Thabeel, et le reste de leurs collègues, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse. La lettre fut transcrite en caractères araméens et traduite en araméen.

8. Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9. Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
9. Rehum, gouverneur, Schimschaï, secrétaire, et le reste de leurs collègues, ceux de Din, d`Arpharsathac, de Tharpel, d`Apharas, d`Érec, de Babylone, de Suse, de Déha, d`Élam,
9. Rehoma mpanolo-tsaina sy Simsay, mpanoratra ary ny namany sisa, dia ny Dinaita, ny Afarsatkita, ny Tarpelita, ny Afarsaita, ny arkevita, ny Babyloniana, ny Sosanita, ny Dehavita sy ny Elamita,
10. And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

11. This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
11. C`est ici la copie de la lettre qu`ils envoyèrent au roi Artaxerxès: Tes serviteurs, les gens de ce côté du fleuve, etc.

12. Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
12. Que le roi sache que les Juifs partis de chez toi et arrivés parmi nous à Jérusalem rebâtissent la ville rebelle et méchante, en relèvent les murs et en restaurent les fondements.

13. Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
13. Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, ils ne paieront ni tribut, ni impôt, ni droit de passage, et que le trésor royal en souffrira.
13. "Koa aoka ankehitriny ho fantatry ny mpanjaka, fa raha hatao io tanàna io, ka hatsangana indray ny mandany, dia tsy hety handoa hetra, na haba, na sara izy; ka dia hahatonga fatiantoka amin' ny vola miditra ho an' ny mpanjaka izany."
14. Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
14. Or, comme nous mangeons le sel du palais et qu`il ne nous paraît pas convenable de voir mépriser le roi, nous envoyons au roi ces informations.
14. Koa satria mahazo ny fivelomanay avy amin' ny lapan' ny mpanjaka izahay, ary tsy mety aminay ny mijery ny fahafaham-baràkan' ny mpanjaka, dia naniraka hampahafantatra ny mpanjaka izany izahay,
15. That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
15. "Qu`on fasse des recherches dans le livre des mémoires de tes pères; et tu trouveras et verras dans le livre des mémoires que cette ville est une ville rebelle, funeste aux rois et aux provinces, et qu`on s`y est livré à la révolte dès les temps anciens. C`est pourquoi cette ville a été détruite."
15. "Mba hizahana ny boky firaketan' ny razanao, dia ho hitanao eo amin' ny boky firaketana ary ho fantatrao fa io tanàna io dia tanàna mpikomy ka nampidi-doza ny mpanjaka sy ny faritany maro, sady efa nisy fikomiana tao hatrizay ela izay; koa izany no naharava io tanàna io."
16. We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
16. Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, par cela même tu n`auras plus de possession de ce côté du fleuve.
16. Ary milaza marimarina amin' ny mpanjaka izahay fa raha haorina indray io tanàna io, ka voatsangana ny mandany, dia tsy hanana anjara amin' ny ety an-dafin' ny ony ety intsony ianao.
17. Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
17. Réponse envoyée par le roi à Rehum, gouverneur, à Schimschaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs collègues, demeurant à Samarie et autres lieux de l`autre côté du fleuve: Salut, etc.
17. Dia nalefan' ny mpanjaka ny valiny ho any amin-dRehoma mpanolo-tsaina sy Simsay mpanoratra mbamin' ny namany sisa izay nonina tany Samaria sy tany amin' ny tanàna sasany an-dafin' ny ony hoe: Fiadanana, amin' ny fotoana...
18. The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
18. La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue exactement devant moi.
18. Ny taratasy izay nalefanareo ho aty aminay dia efa voavaky mazava tsara teo anatrehako.
19. And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
19. "J`ai donné ordre de faire des recherches; et l`on a trouvé que dès les temps anciens cette ville s`est soulevée contre les rois, et qu`on s`y est livré à la sédition et à la révolte."
19. Ary nandidy aho, ka nasaiko nozahana dia hita fa nikomy tamin' ny mpanjaka maro hatrizay ela izay io tanàna io, ary nisy fikomiana sy fiodinana natao tao.
20. There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
20. Il y eut à Jérusalem des rois puissants, maîtres de tout le pays de l`autre côté du fleuve, et auxquels on payait tribut, impôt, et droit de passage.
20. Ary efa nisy mpanjaka mahery izay nanjaka tany Jerosalema nanapaka ny tany rehetra any an-dafin' ny ony ka nandoavana hetra sy haba ary sara.
21. Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
21. En conséquence, ordonnez de faire cesser les travaux de ces gens, afin que cette ville ne se rebâtisse point avant une autorisation de ma part.
21. Koa dia manaova didy hampitsahatra ireo olona ireo, mba tsy hamboarina io tanàna io, mandra-panolotra didy hafa avy aty amiko.
22. Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
22. Gardez-vous de mettre en cela de la négligence, de peur que le mal n`augmente au préjudice des rois.
22. "Ary tandremo ankehitriny, fandrao misy tsy vitanareo izany; fa nahoana no havela handroso ny ratsy hampidi-doza ny mpanjaka?"
23. Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
23. Aussitôt que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Rehum, Schimschaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils allèrent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et firent cesser leurs travaux par violence et par force.

24. Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
24. Alors s`arrêta l`ouvrage de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et il fut interrompu jusqu`à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
24. Dia nitsahatra ny fanaovana ny tranon' Andriamanitra izay tany Jerosalema. Dia nitsahatra izany hatramin' ny taona faharoa nanjakan' i Dariosy, mpanjakan' i Persia.
