The People's Confession of Sin
1. Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
1. Pendant qu`Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s`était rassemblé auprès de lui une foule très nombreuse de gens d`Israël, hommes, femmes et enfants, et le peuple répandait d`abondantes larmes.
1. "Ary raha mbola nivavaka sy niaiky Ezra sady nitomany sy niankohoka teo anoloan' ny tranon' Andriamanitra, dia nivory teo aminy ny olona marobe avy tamin' ny Isiraely, ny lehilahy sy vehivavy mbamin' ny ankizy; fa nitomany mafy dia mafy ny olona."
2. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
2. Alors Schecania, fils de Jehiel, d`entre les fils d`Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu, en nous alliant à des femmes étrangères qui appartiennent aux peuples du pays. Mais Israël ne reste pas pour cela sans espérance.
2. "Dia namaly Sekania, zanak' i Jehiela, isan' ny taranak' i Elama, ka nanao tamin' i Ezra hoe: Izahay efa nanao izay mahadiso amin' Andriamanitsika, fa efa naka vehivavy hafa firenena avy tamin' ny tompon-tany ho vadinay; nefa mbola misy fanantenana ihany ho an' ny Isiraely ny amin' izany zavatra izany."
3. Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
3. Faisons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu pour le renvoi de toutes ces femmes et de leurs enfants, selon l`avis de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et que l`on agisse d`après la loi.
3. "Koa aoka izahay hanao fanekena amin' Andriamanitsika hisaotra ny vady rehetra sy hanary izay naterany araka ny anatry ny tompoko sy izay mangovitra amin' ny didin' Andriamanitra; ary aoka hatao araka ny lalàna izany."
4. Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.
4. Lève-toi, car cette affaire te regarde. Nous serons avec toi. Prends courage et agis.
4. "Mitsangàna, fa adidinao izany, ary izahay koa momba anao; mahereza ka ataovy izany."
5. Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
5. Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, et de tout Israël, de faire ce qui venait d`être dit. Et ils le jurèrent.
5. "Dia nitsangana Ezra ka nampianiana ny lohan' ny mpisorona sy ny Levita ary ny Isiraely rehetra hanao araka izany teny izany; dia nianiana ireo."
6. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.
6. "Puis Esdras se retira de devant la maison de Dieu, et il alla dans la chambre de Jochanan, fils d`Éliaschib; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea point de pain et il ne but point d`eau, parce qu`il était dans la désolation à cause du péché des fils de la captivité."
6. "Dia nitsangana niala teo anoloan' ny tranon' Andriamanitra Ezra ka nankany amin' ny efitrano nitoeran' i Johanana, zanak' i Eliasiba ; ary nony tafiditra tao izy, dia tsy mba nihinan-kanina na nisotro rano, fa nalahelo izy noho ny fandikan-dalàn' ireo izay nobaboina."
7. And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
7. On publia dans Juda et à Jérusalem que tous les fils de la captivité eussent à se réunir à Jérusalem,
7. Ary nanao fanambarana eran' i Joda sy Jerosalema ireo ho any amin' ny zanaky ny fahababoana rehetra mba hivory any Jerosalema.
8. And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
8. et que, d`après l`avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque ne s`y serait pas rendu dans trois jours aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même exclu de l`assemblée des fils de la captivité.
8. Ary na iza na iza no tsy tonga anatin' ny hateloana araka ny torohevitry ny mpanapaka sy ny loholona, dia horobaina ny fananany rehetra, ary hoesorina amin' ny fiangonan' ireo izay nobaboina izy.
9. Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
9. Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C`était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance et par suite de la pluie.
9. "Ary nony tamin' ny andro fahatelo dia vory tany Jerosalema ny lehilahy rehetra tamin' ny Joda sy ny Benjamina, dia tamin' ny andro faharoapolo tamin' ny volana fahasivy; ary nipetraka teo an-kalalahan' ny tranon' Andriamanitra ny olona rehetra ka nangovitra noho izany zavatra izany sy noho ny ranonorana be."
10. And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.
10. Esdras, le sacrificateur, se leva et leur dit: Vous avez péché en vous alliant à des femmes étrangères, et vous avez rendu Israël encore plus coupable.
10. Dia nitsangana Ezra mpisorona ka nanao taminy hoe: Efa nandika lalàna ianareo ka naka vehivavy hafa firenena ho vadinareo, hampitombo ny fahadisoan' ny Isiraely.
11. Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
11. Confessez maintenant votre faute à l`Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté! Séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.
11. "Koa miaike amin' i Jehovah Andriamanitry ny razanareo ankehitriny, ka ataovy izay sitrany; ary misaraha ianareo amin' ny olona tompon-tany sy ny vehivavy hafa firenena vadinareo."
12. Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
12. Toute l`assemblée répondit d`une voix haute: A nous de faire comme tu l`as dit!
12. "Dia namaly ny fiangonana rehetra ka niredona mafy hoe: Izay lazainao dia tsy maintsy hataonay;"
13. But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
13. "Mais le peuple est nombreux, le temps est à la pluie, et il n`est pas possible de rester dehors; d`ailleurs, ce n`est pas l`oeuvre d`un jour ou deux, car il y en a beaucoup parmi nous qui ont péché dans cette affaire."
13. "Nefa maro ny olona, ary fotoanan' ny orambe izao, ka tsy mahatoetra ety ala-trano izahay, sady raharaha tsy vita indray andro na indroa andro izao; fa maro izahay no efa nandika lalàna ny amin' izany zavatra izany."
14. Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
14. "Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l`assemblée; et tous ceux qui dans nos villes se sont alliés à des femmes étrangères viendront à des époques fixes, avec les anciens et les juges de chaque ville, jusqu`à ce que l`ardente colère de notre Dieu se soit détournée de nous au sujet de cette affaire."
14. Aoka ny mpanapaka anay amin' ny fiangonana rehetra no hijanona, ary aoka izay rehetra naka vehivavy hafa firenena ho vadiny no hankaty amin' ny fotoan' andro voatendry ary hiaraka aminy ny loholona isan-tanàna sy ny mpitsara ao, mandra-pialan' ny firehetan' ny fahatezeran' Andriamanitsika amintsika ny amin' izany zavatra izany.
15. Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.
15. Jonathan, fils d`Asaël, et Jachzia, fils de Thikva, appuyés par Meschullam et par le Lévite Schabthai, furent les seuls à combattre cet avis,
15. Jonatana, zanak' i Asahela sy Jahaza, zanak' i Tikoa ihany no nampiasaina ny amin' izany zavatra izany, ary Mesolama sy Sabetahy Levita no nanampy ireo.
16. And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
16. "auquel se conformèrent les fils de la captivité. On choisit Esdras, le sacrificateur, et des chefs de famille selon leurs maisons paternelles, tous désignés par leurs noms; et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour s`occuper de la chose."
16. "Ary ny zanaky ny fahababoana dia nanao izany; ary navahana Ezra mpisorona sy ny sasany amin' ny lohan' ny fianakaviany araka ny fianakaviany avy, sady samy efa notononina anarana, ka nipetraka handinika izany raharaha izany tamin' ny andro voalohany tamin' ny volana fahafolo."
17. And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
17. Le premier jour du premier mois, ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui s`étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères.
17. Ary nony tonga ny andro voalohany tamin' ny volana voalohany dia vitany ny raharaha ny amin' ny lehilahy rehetra izay efa naka vehivavy hafa firenena ho vadiny.
Those Guilty of Intermarriage
18. And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
18. Parmi les fils de sacrificateurs, il s`en trouva qui s`étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères: des fils de Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et de ses frères, Maaséja, Éliézer, Jarib et Guedalia,
18. "Ary teo amin' ny zanaky ny mpisorona izay hita fa naka vehivavy hafa firenena ho vadiny dia izao: Avy amin' ny taranak' i Jesoa, zanak' i Jozadaka sy ny rahalahiny dia Mahaseia sy Eliezera sy Jariba ary Gedalia;"
19. And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.
19. "qui s`engagèrent, en donnant la main, à renvoyer leurs femmes et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice de culpabilité;"

20. And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah.
20. "des fils d`Immer, Hanani et Zebadia;"

21. And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.
21. "des fils de Harim, Maaséja, Élie, Schemaeja, Jehiel et Ozias;"

22. And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
22. des fils de Paschhur, Eljoénaï, Maaséja, Ismaël, Nethaneel, Jozabad et Éleasa.

23. Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
23. Parmi les Lévites: Jozabad, Schimeï, Kélaja ou Kelitha, Pethachja, Juda et Éliézer.

24. Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

25. Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26. And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah.

27. And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

44. All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
44. Tous ceux-là avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et plusieurs en avaient eu des enfants.
